17.1 Verbos Modais: Uma Introdução 🧩
Verbos Modais (Modal Verbs) são verbos auxiliares especiais em inglês. Eles nos ajudam a expressar ideias como habilidade, possibilidade, permissão, obrigação, etc. Alguns verbos modais comuns são can, could, may, might, must, should, will, would.
Características importantes dos verbos modais:
- Eles não mudam de forma com o sujeito (não adicionamos "-s" para he/she/it).
Ex: I can swim. He can swim. (Não "He cans swim.") - Eles são sempre seguidos pelo verbo principal na forma base (infinitivo sem "to").
Ex: She can play the guitar. (Não "She can to play..." ou "She can plays...") - Para formar negativas, adicionamos "not" depois do verbo modal (muitas vezes contraído: can't, couldn't).
- Para formar perguntas, invertemos o verbo modal e o sujeito (Ex: Can you...?).

John was visiting his grandfather for the weekend. They were looking at old photo albums.
"Look at this, John," said his grandfather, pointing to a picture. "When I was your age, I could climb that tall tree in our backyard in under a minute. I could also swim across the lake without getting tired. I was very active."
John smiled. "Wow, Grandpa! I can climb trees, but I'm not that fast. And I can swim, but not across a whole lake! You were really athletic."
"Yes, I was. But now, I can't run like I used to, and I certainly can't climb trees anymore," he said with a laugh. "My knees are too old for that. But I can tell great stories, can't I?"
"Yes, you can!" John agreed. "Your stories are the best."
Later, John was trying to assemble a new model airplane, but he was having trouble with a small piece. "Grandpa," he asked, "Could you help me with this? I can't seem to get this part to fit."
"Of course," his grandfather replied, putting on his glasses. "Let's see... Ah, I see the problem. I couldn't fix my old watch yesterday because the parts were too small, but I think I can manage this."
John watched as his grandfather skillfully fixed the piece. "Thanks, Grandpa! You're the best."
"Anytime," he said. "Now, can I have a cup of tea, please? My throat is a bit dry from all this talking."
"Sure! I can make it for you," John said, heading to the kitchen. He felt happy that while some abilities change over time, the ability to help each other never has to.
